Title: Feel depressed after watching the finale?
Description: You're not the only one...

VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE from BuddyTV:

Grey's Anatomy finale depresses its fans

There are good season finales, there are bad season finales, and then there was last night's Grey's Anatomy finale. The episode couldn't really be called “bad”, because it wasn't. It felt like vintage Grey's Anatomy, save for the fact that it ended in a horribly depressing manner. The reaction across the internet has been bizarre. The quality of the episode hasn't been called into question nearly as much as how the episode left most of the characters in a depressing state.

You can read about exactly what happened in the episode here in our recap. One of the big questions, though, is how tough should a TV series like Grey's treat their characters in a season finale? The only character to really leave the episode on any semblance of a high note was Addison Montgomery, but she's leaving for her own spin-off, Private Practice.

The season finale has always been a tricky little beast. Often, producers and writers will want to put their characters in some sort of peril that gives way to a suspenseful, summer-long cliffhanger. Other times, they'll resolve a season-long conflict. Sometimes, it is a combination. However, the series finales that are truly successful always seem to have an uplifting note at the end of their finales (unless it is a pure cliffhanger).

For instance, look at last night's season finale of The Office. For Office fans, you really couldn't ask for a more perfect hour of television to end the season. Plot twists, reveals, humor, and a final moment that was sure to put a smile on any viewer's face; again, you could not have asked for a better, more invigorating finale.

Grey's was a total letdown. Not in quality, mind you, but in the way it treated the characters. Nothing went right, everything was a disaster, and we all now must wait until next year to watch the crew from Seattle Grace sift through their personal wreckage. It's going to be a long few months for Grey's fans.

What do all you fans think? Should they have ended the season differently? How would you have ended it?

----
I'm thinking I pretty much agree with this all. I LOVED the finale but at the same time thought rather "Eh..." about it just because how all of it ended. And yes, I even agree with the little snippet about THE OFFICE. OH YEEEEEEEEAH!

LexieGrey - May 21, 2007 05:54 AM (GMT)
I loved this finale because it was so raw and real, how can they expect the finale to end all happy and sappy? Real life is dark and twisty and its tradition for Grey's to end on an emotional note.

joshgalassi23 - May 21, 2007 05:57 AM (GMT)
I gotta admit though - as much as I loved the finale, there WERE some cliche parts in it...but it works because of the situation I guess.

LexieGrey - May 21, 2007 06:20 AM (GMT)
what was cliche?

KarevsLovah - May 21, 2007 06:27 AM (GMT)
I don't agree.. I think it was a good finale!! I loved it. Last years finale didnt end with everybody happy either but it was still a great finale!! I think that its what makes the seasons so much more interesting! You cant wait for the premiere to come on TV and when it does you cant take your eyes off of it.

I loved this finale like Sara said, it was raw and real and full of emotion and great acting.

Haha, now don't completely BASH me....but I thought even know it worked REALLY REALLY well under the circumstances, the whole "waiting at the alter" was a TAD cliche...but the events that took place thereafter were ANYTHING but that.

Oh and the review still says the finale is great...they just didn't like how it ended with nothing but sadness with very little hope for ANYONE. It's still one of the best finales I've seen from a show this year...but gahhh. I want everyone to be happy..but it is realistic so HM.

DeeDee - May 21, 2007 07:57 AM (GMT)
I loved it caause it felt like Greys again!!! Dark & Twisty as ever!!!
It wasdepressing...but the actors were so good that it was like amazing to watch!!!

inmymcdreams - May 21, 2007 07:40 PM (GMT)
It was a great epi but it was a bit depressing not that I minded it was written very well that means lots of funniness next season :P

TéTé - May 21, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
actually I can't say that i didn't liked the episode bcz thats a lie
i realy liked the episode
i loved the way that shandra shows us {even if it wasn't in the wedding} the vows burke was gonna say in the wedding it was really beautiful!
and the gizzie scene waw i really loved it!
 but why did they have to run in just when george was gonna answer!
the Miranda & George scene was realy beautiful! the way she look at him ans ask him if she failed him...
it's sad it will not be Miranda the chief...
of and the merder scene ... speechless...
at least the wedding scene i was realy surprised to see that it was BURKE who "run away" but i think that what he did in some way was really romentic!
I cant wait to see the season 4! ...

mcdreamyislove - May 21, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
Don't get me wrong. Very good episode but it was depressing. Between Cristina's heartbraking breakdown and all the merder drama, it was a bit depressing. Barely any happy notes in the episode to me. Alot of sad things

Like i said, GREAT episode. Everyone did a phenomenal acting job but i couldnt help and feel sad after all the events that happened. Like Merder breaking up :sob: and Cristina :sob:.

But thats Dark and twisty grey's for you. I guess i was expecting a bit of a more happy finale. :]

Ashley - May 21, 2007 11:21 PM (GMT)
I wanna know what Derek was going to say to Meredith at the end of the finale!!!

Ixlovexmcdreamy - May 22, 2007 02:23 AM (GMT)

haha of course you know!

mcdreamyislove - May 23, 2007 10:08 AM (GMT)
They are also play Six days pt 2 on thursday. So its 2 straight hours of grey's :]. Even though they are repeats i love the Six days episodes

AclaireC - May 24, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
I liked it! I loved the Callie moments although I don't know how I feel about her being Chief Resident. It will be interesting to see how her character and Bailey's character will change because of it. I think my favorite scene was the one with Bailey and George....so touching!

awesome! I don't think I'll have time to watch them though. even though I could just watch them anytime I want online so it really doesn't matter. and without the commercials. what would I do without the internet?

what happened in Six Days? all I remember are the MerDer day openings when they're laying in bed complaining.

LexieGrey - May 24, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
All the George's Dad stuff :(

hello12 - May 30, 2007 07:32 AM (GMT)
Not really, it was a good finale. :)

Looking forward to the wedding, also the test results and the ups and downs of everyone, oh and Jane doe- weather she will go wioth alex or her hubby. It was funny with christina having no eyesbrows. (LOL)

Thanks for keeping the site updated with the episodes. Over here in the UK it seems that GA has been moved to cable tv, a channel that I dont subscribe to so keep season 4 coming if you can. :)

Lennizabeth - May 30, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
I agree with almost everything in the article (especially the office blurb). The only thing I don't agree with is that it was a good finale. It wasn't a good finale. The only part I liked was the George/Bailey part. I like to lose myself in the grey's episodes and real life is depressing enough. And yes, grey's is meant to reflect real life even though it's just a show, and yes real life isn't all duckies and bunnies and happy rainbows, but it's not all gloom and depression and everyone loses either. I enjoyed empathizing with the characters' troubles and then I enjoyed the ride uphill with them when they reach their own personal triumphs and experience character growths. Is the season finale of the very last episode going to give us the ultimate revelation that Grey's anatomy actually takes place in Hell and not Seattle? Why must they constantly put the characters through the wringer? Are Meredith and Derek ever allowed to be happy? If it's boring for them to be happy all the time, what is it if they're depressed and angry at each other all the time? Maybe the only current character I really like anymore is Bailey because at least she gets to be happy longer than two days. And just my luck, we see about two seconds of her each episode. I say current because I still love season 1 and season 2 George. :(

I have to say I was a little disappointed with the finale in the sense that I am a true romantic but if everythin had gone good then what sort of story line will they have for the next season or the next after that so im happy because at least we know there'll be more. Dont ya think a season finale with happy feelin signals the end!!! I definately dont want that.

mcdreamyislove - May 31, 2007 08:25 PM (GMT)
I've come to the conclusion that Shonda and the fellow writers of grey's do NOT know how to write a happy couple.

Meredith and Derek are never allowed to be happy. I understand that shonda is trying to hint that a relationship isnt always supposed to be rainbows and candy but the unnecessary need to beat up on meredith and merder is pissing me off. Yes it is a drama show but enough is enough. There are other ways of putting drama in the show that dont involve mer and derek being on and off for stupid reasons. It's like Friends all over again.

Shonda even said herself that she hates breaking up merder alot, she doesnt want them to be like a grey's version of ross and rachel but she does it anyway. She contradicts herself alot...

This also pertains to Bang but i think merder usually take the worst beating.

McEline - May 31, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
maybe they're afraid of writing hapiness? I don't know but I just want merder to be happy!!!

Ashley - May 31, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
yeah i know what you mean... their constant fighting is just as unrealistic as constant happiness

I'm not saying that everyone needs to be happy, but that the conflicts need resolution sometime. It just seems like everyone just continues to accumulate problems instead of actually ever getting to some kind of solution.

I completely agree! also with Bang, I am so sick of it. Merder need to be happy please please please (I love your avatar by the way) let them be happy!!!!!! And Bang pissed me off most not because I love bang more than merder (I love love merder) but because bang was my last hope at a permanently happy couple and the writers completely pissed all over that.

crazycase - June 4, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
it was dark and twisty but I think it left many openings for next season!

I personally love Ellen's shiny smile and I wish I could see it more often! Don't even get me started about Derek's smile!

right! I think that the writers have been duped into thinking that it's pure drama that brings in the ratings... and even so, if ratings are all they care about, it's not the show I thought it was....

bethiebear11 - June 25, 2007 05:10 AM (GMT)
the characters seem to love drama, so it seemed perfect

Couldn't agree more, I started doubting GA after the ferry-disaster. It' didn't feel like Greys and not to mention The Gizzie-disaster I HATED that part and Shondas plan better be GOOOOOD.
But the finale was Grey's again.

Ixlovexmcdreamy - June 25, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
yeah I agree..lets hope all of season 4 is normal again start-to-finish!

Ashley - June 25, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
yep that would be great! I just watched the very first episode of Grey's last night and it's SO weird to watch with all of the constant happiness and everything. when I saw Izzie and George meeting for the first time I'm like "haha in a year you two are going to sleep together and mess up George's marriage to the woman he hasn't met yet!"

inmymcdreams - June 26, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
you're kidding me right. i did the exact same thing. except it wasn't my first time seeing it. it's like you're going to almost drown. you're going to be fired. you will get a divorce.....

Ixlovexmcdreamy - June 26, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
hahaha I know!! I love it!! i just watched the season 1 finale lastnight and I was doing the same thing!

McEline - June 26, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
I've just watched the season 3 finale for the first time! It was really messy... but still it was good!
